It cost $0.19. Opus 5 needed $0.77 to read 4.
That's the "390x cheaper per headline" claim going around. I don't trust viral numbers, so I checked it.
What holds up:
• The math. $0.19 ÷ 384 is about $0.0005 a story. $0.77 ÷ 4 is about $0.19 a story. That's ~389x.
• The model is real. Jev, from TypeSafe AI, launched this week. It returns a decision plus a confidence score, not text. $0.042 per million input tokens, output free.
What needs an asterisk:
• It's one builder's demo, not a controlled test.
• Different jobs. Jev sorts and scores. Opus can reason and write.
• TypeSafe's own benchmark has Jev about 5 points behind Opus 5 on accuracy (68% vs 73%), at roughly 440x lower cost.
• "Can't hallucinate" means the answer always fits the format. It can still pick the wrong option.
So I don't read this as "Jev beats Opus." I read it as: the boring sorting step in your workflow probably doesn't need your most expensive model.
